HJHL Roundup - Oct. 11

Scott Fisher

The Bisons haven't been satisfied with their starts lately.

They did something about it on Friday night.

Okotoks jumped all over the Airdrie Thunder, grabbing a 5-0 lead in the first period en route to a convincing 8-1 victory.

"We've had some weaker starts in our past few games," said Evan Woods, who scored a pair of goals and added an assist as the Bisons improved to 7-0-0.

"So that was big for us, to start off hot."

Tyler Alger also potted a pair of goals while Tyson Scott, Ryan Bedard, Tyler Witzke and Josh Niwa also found the net for the visitors.

The Thunder (4-3-0) started the 2018-19 season with an 18-0-0 start before suffering their first loss.

Woods said the Bisons aren't getting ahead of themselves, but said he thinks that mark is within reach.

"We have the team to do it, I think," Woods said. "We have to come out every game and not take any team lightly.

"Any team can beat any team in this league right now."

Winning in Airdrie, where the Thunder was 18-1 last season, made Friday's win a little sweeter.

"Because they won last year, they think they're all that," Woods said. "But we showed them that we're the team to beat this year."

Okotoks will look to move to 8-0 when they host the Stettler Lightning on Sunday (1:15 p.m.).

Flyers 5, Lakers 3

The Flyers are on the board.

High River got goals from five different players to pick up its first win of the season.

Joshua Fleck and Kian Simonson had a goal and an assist while Brennan McPherson, Kyle Hartle and Josh Russo also scored for Higher River (1-6-1), which outshot Lomond 60-24.

Max Johnston made 21 saves to pick up the win.

The Flyers visit the Coaldale Copperheads on Sunday (6 p.m.).

Weston Graumann, Chase Snider and Aiden Whitebear replied for Lomond (0-5-0).

Brady Newton made 55 saves for the Lakers, who will host the Stettler Lightning on Saturday (8 p.m.).
