The Sylvan Lake Wranglers were looking for their first win of the HJHL season.
They got it Friday night in a building that has been notoriously tough on visiting teams.
The Wranglers scored three times in the final half of the first period and held on for a 3-2 win over the defending HJHL-champion Airdrie Thunder.
Zach Kungle, Austin Kalev and Zane Bennett scored for the Wranglers, who outshot the hosts 34-31.
Bennett said it was a big win for his squad, which moved to Sylvan Lake from Blackfalds during the off-season.
"Especially with how this (Airdrie) team, has been the last few years, it feels pretty good to take one out of their barn," the fourth-year HJHL player said.
"We've got a pretty good team moving forward.
"I'm pretty happy with the group of individuals we have in the room."
Jason Horn scored both goals for the Thunder (1-2-0), who host the High River Flyers Sunday afternoon (4:30 p.m.).
The Wranglers visit the Okotoks Bisons on Sunday (1:15 p.m.).
Wheatland Kings 5, Lakers 0
Kody Hammond scored a hat trick as the Strathmore Wheatland Kings blanked the Lomond Lakers.
Keenan Cunningham and Jaycob Masciangelo also found the back of the net while Lucas Muenchrath chipped in with a trio of assists.
Landen Brassard kicked out all 19 shots that came his way as Strathmore improved to 1-1-0 on the season.
The Wheatland Kings will host the High River Flyers on Saturday (8 p.m.) and the Coaldale Copperheads on Sunday (4:15 p.m.).
The Lakers (0-2-0) visit the Medicine Hat Cubs on Sunday (2:45 p.m.).
Lightning 7, Rams 3
Erik Rost, Brenden Tucker and Ty Mulgrove combined for 14 points as the Lightning beat the Rams.
Tucker scored a hat trick and finished with five points while Rost (six points) and Mulgrove (three) scored twice each.
Indiana Kelly booted out 37 shots for the win as Stettler outshot Rocky 64-40.
The Lightning (1-1-0) are in Red Deer to battle the Vipers on Saturday (8 p.m.).
The Rams (1-1-0) host the Ponoka Stampeders on Saturday (8:30 p.m.).
