No game was decided by more than two goals in the HJHL on Saturday, highlighted by an overtime thriller between Lomond and Strathmore.

Lomond Lakers (6) – Strathmore Wheatland Kings (5)

BOSSANO – Gavin Burns had a big night, capped off by scoring the game-winner midway through overtime to propel the Lomond Lakers to a thrilling 6-5 win over the Strathmore Wheatland Kings.

The game saw seven goals in total during the opening 20 minutes as Lomond (6-26-0) took a 4-3 lead into the middle frame, where each team would find the back of the net once.

Burns finished off with three goals and two assists, while Wacy Sandum, Tyler Rohl and Kirk Fraser rounded out the scoring. Theo Paskuski made 39 saves in the Lakers’ crease.

Hayden Vander Ploeg tallied twice for Strathmore (15-14-3), while Robert Butterwick scored once and added two assists.

Riley Stovka suffered the loss in net, making 31 saves on the night, while Brenden Moore and Benjamin Kruse each added a single.

Red Deer Vipers (3) – Coaldale Copperheads (1)

RED DEER – Justin Pearup’s second period tally proved to be the difference as the Red Deer Vipers held on for a 3-1 win over the Coaldale Copperheads.

Mack Differenz opened the scoring in the later stages of the first period, while Ryan Vandervlis sealed the deal with an empty-netter in the final minute of the game.

Justin Anderson stopped all but one of the 26 shots he faced between the pipes for the Vipers (23-7-1).

Chase Williamson had the lone goal of the game for the Copperheads (26-5-2), while Nolan Berner turned aside 23 shots in the loss.

High River Flyers (4) – Medicine Hat Cubs (2)

MEDICINE HAT – A 49-save performance from Max Johnston helped the High River Flyers take a 4-2 road victory over the Medicine Hat Cubs.

Jakob Jefferies and Brennan McPherson each led the way for the Flyers (11-19-4) with a goal and two assists apiece, while Myles Leckie and Joshua Fleck rounded out the scoring, each netting a single.

Logan Robertson and Tristan Stensrud tallied for the Cubs (15-14-3), which got 24 saves from netminder Dawsen Savage.

Mountainview Colts (4) – Ponoka Stampeders (2)

DIDSBURY – Three unanswered goals in less than three-and-a-half minutes to open the second period propelled the Mountainview Colts to a 4-2 victory over the Ponoka Stampeders.

With the game tied 1-1 after 20 minutes, Travis Gerrard gave the Colts (20-11-2) the lead, while Josh Gette then netted two goals in just over a minute as Mountainview suddenly had a 4-1 lead just 3:28 into the frame.

Reed Engman opened the scoring for Mountainview, early in the first period, while Ethan Woodward recorded the win in net, stopping 25-of-27 shots fired his way.

Seth Eckert and Ryan Harder provided the offence for the Stampeders (9-22-2), which got 49 saves from goaltender Brandon Clark.
