HJHL Roundup: January 4

The first Friday night of 2019 saw four games played across the HJHL.

Okotoks Bisons (5) – Mountainview Colts (4)

OKOTOKS – Devon Barlow scored the game winner 2:54 into overtime to lift the Okotoks Bisons to a 5-4 win over the Mountainview Colts.

Kody Briggs added three goals for the Bisons (19-5-3), while Connor Taylor rounded out the scoring.

Wyatt Gelinas collected a goal and two assists for the Colts (16-10-2), which trailed 4-2 entering the third period. Quinton Thorburn found the back of the net twice, the second coming with just 58 seconds left in the third period to send the game to overtime.

Mitchell Visser added a goal and assist for the Colts, which got 49 saves from netminder Ethan Woodward.

Devin Reagan turned aside 50 shots in the Bisons’ crease to earn the victory.

Cochrane Generals (6) – Strathmore Wheatland Kings (4)

COCHRANE – Harry Osler and Scott Shugg each scored twice to propel the Cochrane Generals to a 6-4 victory over the Strathmore Wheatland Kings.

Knute Loe made 26 saves in net for Cochrane (17-7-2), which has now won five straight, while Ben Davison and Brandon Aab rounded out the scoring, each potting a single.

Garret Vander Ploeg, Lucas Muenchrath, Isaac Benoit and Tyler Skehar provided the offence for Strathmore (13-13-2), which trailed 4-1 after 20 minutes and 6-1 midway through the second period before working their way back in the game.

Ponoka Stampeders (8) – High River Flyers (2)

HIGH RIVER – Ryan Harder scored twice and setup two more as the Ponoka Stampeders skated to an 8-2 road victory over the High River Flyers.

Braden Klessens finished with a goal and two assists, while Jordan Jacobi, Kacey Straub, Andrew Church, Kieran Bulloch and Odin Obray rounded out the attack for the Stampeders (8-16-2).

Keenan Starkell tossed aside 20-of-22 shots faced to register the victory between the pipes.

Brennan McPherson and Joshua Fleck had the goals for the Flyers (10-17-3).

Airdrie Thunder (10) – Blackfalds Wranglers (2)

AIRDRIE – A four-point game off the stick of Jordan McConnell paced the Airdrie Thunder to a 10-2 win over the Blackfalds Wranglers.

McConnell scored twice and added two assists, while teammate Barrett Sheen chipped in with two goals and one assist.

Rylan Plante-Crough and Tristan Paquette each finished with a goal and two helpers for the Thunder (28-2-0), which have now won six straight.

Cooper Page, Brett Campbell, Brayden Dunn and Tyler Petrie each found the back of the net once to round out the scoring for Airdrie, while netminder Ryan Simpson finished with 17 saves.

Taite Opdendries and Kyle Imesch tallied for the Wranglers (7-15-5).
