A shootout was needed in Big Valley between the Vipers and Lightning, highlighting an exciting four-game Friday across the HJHL.
Red Deer Vipers (4) – Stettler Lightning (3)
BIG VALLEY – Jacksyn Goodall opened the scoring in the first period, and then ended the scoring with a shootout marker to give the Red Deer Vipers a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Stetter Lightning.
Lane Sim and Mack Differenz also found the back of the net in regulation for the Vipers (14-5-1), which held a 3-0 lead early in the second period before the Lightning (10-9-1) would claw back with three goals in a span of eight minutes to make it a 3-3 game after 40 minutes.
Jeff Ternes, Quade Cassidy and Erik Rost had the goals for the Lightning.
Justin Anderson made 35 saves in the win for Red Deer, while Davin Nattestad turned aside 43 shots for Stettler.
After overtime solved nothing, Keaton Sawicki for the Vipers and Tristen Nixon for the Lightning, each found the back of the net in the first round of the shootout and it wouldn’t be until the fourth round that Goodall would end it and give the Vipers their ninth straight win.
Airdrie Thunder (3) – Strathmore Wheatland Kings (2)
AIRDRIE – Ryan Simpson turned aside 31 shots as the Airdrie Thunder held on for a 3-2 win over the Strathmore Wheatland Kings.
Tristan Paquette, Jason Wenzel and Brett LeGrandeur each found the back of the net for the Thunder (22-1-0).
Lucas Muencrath scored both goals for the Wheatland Kings (11-9-1), which got a solid 40-save performance from netminder Brett Willan.
Coaldale Copperheads (5) – Lomond Lakers (3)
CLARESHOLM – A four-goal first period propelled the Coaldale Copperheads to a 5-3 win over the Lomond Lakers.
Jared Bainbridge got things started with a goal just 12 seconds into the game and had completed a natural hat trick by the 12:11 mark of the frame.
Mitchell Konschuk and Ty Abbott rounded out the scoring for Coaldale (16-3-2), which have now won four straight.
Wacy Sandum scored twice for the Lakers (5-16-0), while Kyle Fry added a single.
Nolan Berner turned aside 38-of-41 shots faced in the Copperheads’ crease, while Brady Newton made 62 saves in the loss.
Cochrane Generals (5) – High River Flyers (2)
HIGH RIVER – Vance Wesley scored twice and added an assist as the Cochrane Generals skated to a 5-2 decision over the High River Flyers.
River Ross also had a three-point outing for the Generals (11-6-1), scoring once and setting up two others, while Jordan Marks and Braden Bain rounded out the scoring.
Jharin Bantugan and Josh Russo provided the offence for the Flyers (8-14-2), which held a 2-1 lead for the majority of the second period before Wesley would knot the score at two with 2:55 remaining in the frame.
Erik Garber recorded the win in goal, his third of the season, making 24 saves on the night.
Max Johnston turned aside 38-of-43 shots faced in the High River crease.
