A pair of one-goal games highlighted a busy five-game Saturday night across the HJHL.
Red Deer Vipers (2) – Medicine Hat Cubs (1)
RED DEER – Justin Pearups’s second period tally proved to be the difference as the Red Deer Vipers held on for a 2-1 win over the Medicine Hat Cubs.
Elijah Johnson opened the scoring with the lone goal of the first period, coming just 1:22 into the frame, giving the Vipers (9-5-1) a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Pearup made it a 2-0 game with his second period tally, a score that would hold up until just past the midway mark of the final frame when Jack Hilworth broke the shutout bid and got the Cubs (6-8-2) on the board.
Justin Travis finished with 17 saves for the Vipers, picking up his fourth win of the season in the process, while Brett Vanderveer suffered the loss in the Medicine Hat crease, making 24 saves along the way.
Lomond Lakers (5) – Ponoka Stampeders (4)
PONOKA – Damion Keller’s first goal of the season stood up as the winner as the Lomond Lakers edged the Ponoka Stampeders by a score of 5-4.
With the game tied at four entering the third period, Keller found the back of the net just 30 seconds into the frame to put the Lakers (5-10-0) out in front, while goaltender Brady Newton shut the door from there, making 15 of his 34 total saves in the third period alone.
Clayton Billyard finished with two goals for Lomond, while Ryan Leeper and Kaidin Hodgson each chipped in with a single.
Odin Obray, Wade Lightburn, Seth Eckert and Devin Anderson provided the offence for the Stampeders (2-8-2), while Keenan Starkell finished with 34 saves between the pipes.
Stettler Lightning (6) – High River Flyers (3)
STETTLER – Davin Nattestad made 31 saves as the Stettler Lightning used a balanced attack to skate to a 6-3 win over the High River Flyers.
Six different players found the back of then net for the Lightning (6-7-0), as Jeff Ternes added a first period marker before Kieran Rost, Rylee Jacobson, Tye Mulgrove and Logan Spady each tallied in the middle frame to make it a 5-2 game after 40 minutes.
Brenden Tucker rounded out the Stettler attack with an empty-netter.
Jakob Jefferies scored twice for the Flyers (6-11-2), while Jharin Bantugan added a single.
Coaldale Copperheads (10) – Strathmore Wheatland Kings (3)
COALDALE – Jared Bainbridge had a hat trick as the Coaldale Copperheads cruised to a 10-3 win over the Strathmore Wheatland Kings.
Tyler Anderson added a pair of goals, while Levi Anderson led all skaters with four points, all assists.
Jayden Bexte chipped in with a goal and two assists for the Copperheads (10-2-2), while Riese Nevil, Brant Mack, Ty Abbott and Chase Williamson rounded out the scoring.
Nolan Berner stopped 25-of-28 shots faced in the Coaldale crease.
Cole Busslinger, Zachary Suntjens and Rylee Hebert replied for the Wheatland Kings (8-6-1).
Okotoks Bisons (12) – Three Hills Thrashers (1)
THREE HILLS – Ten different players found the back of the net for the Okotoks Bisons as they rolled to a 12-1 win over the Three Hills Thrashers on Saturday.
Jason Horn and Connor Taylor each led the way with two goals and one assist apiece for the Bisons (13-2-2), while Brandt Black led all players with four points, scoring once and setting up three more.
Braedan Germain, Jagger Thiessen, Bryan Weber and Dallas Otto each had a one-goal, two-assist outing, while Kody Briggs and Kyle Dunville each chipped in with a goal and assist.
Nicholas Ewanchuk recorded the win in the Okotoks’ crease, stopping 26 shots along the way.
Austin Price had the lone goal of the game for the Thrashers (1-12-0), which trailed 5-0 after 20 minutes before falling behind 10-0 after 40 minutes.
