The Colts won a tight one, while the Bisons and Thunder continue to roll early in the HJHL season.
Mountainview Colts (2) – High River Kings (1)
HIGH RIVER – Alan Klinck was the overtime hero as the Mountainview Colts edged the High River Kings by a 2-1 score.
Egor Sinko opened the scoring with the lone goal of the first period, giving the Flyers (2-2-1) the lead, which they would hold onto until Josh Gette put the Colts (2-1-0) on the board with 5:17 left in the frame.
Griffin Andrews stopped 36-of-37 shots in the Colts’ crease, while his counterpart at the other end of the rink, Chantz Vinck, also had a big night, finishing with 49 saves.
Strathmore Wheatland Kings (6) – Stettler Lightning (3)
STRATHMORE – Three goals in the opening frame and three more in the third period propelled the Strathmore Wheatland Kings to a 6-3 win over the Stettler Lightning on Friday.
Isaac Benoit factored in on four goals for the Wheatland Kings (1-1-1), scoring three of them himself while also setting up one other.
Lucas Muenchrath and Garret Vander Ploeg each finished with a goal and two helpers, while Kyle Bracko rounded out the scoring with a single.
The Lightning (1-2-0) were paced by Kieran Rost, who finished with a goal and two helpers, while Braydon Whiteford and Brenden Tucker also found the back of the net.
Riley Stovka made 28 saves to pick up the win between the pipes for Strathmore.
Airdrie Thunder (7) – Blackfalds Wranglers (2)
AIRDRIE – A four-goal second period propelled the Airdrie Thunder to their third straight victory as they skated to a 7-2 win over the Blackfalds Wranglers on Friday.
Zachary Dubois and Rylan Plante-Crough each finished with a goal and two helpers for the Thunder (3-0-0), which are averaging 10 goals per-game to start the season.
Jackson Little stopped 19-of-21 shots between the pipes to pick up the win, while Jordan McConnell and Jacob MacDonald each had a goal and assist.
Andrew Church and Austin Lawson had the goals for the Wranglers (0-1-0).
Tristan Paquette, Brett Campbell and Jason Wenzel rounded out the Thunder attack.
Okotoks Bisons (8) – Lomond Lakers (1)
OKOTOKS – The Okotoks Bisons became the HJHL’s first five-game winners of the season as they cruised to an 8-1 win over the Lomond Lakers.
Connor Taylor led the Bisons (5-0-0) with two goals and one assist, while teammates Nicholas Murrell, Austin O’Bray and Brandt Black each finished with a goal and two helpers.
Okotoks led 3-0 after 20 minutes before tacking on two more in the second period.
Jagger Thiessen, Devyn Stewart and Joel Deeprose added singles.
Clayton Billyard had the lone goal of the game for Lomond (1-1-0), which saw their netminder Brady Newton make 53 saves.
Nicholas Ewanchuck registered the win between the pipes for the Bisons.
