The first big Friday night of the 2018-19 HJHL season has come and gone as Airdrie, High River, Lomond, and Okotoks skated off with two points.

High River Flyers (3) – Red Deer Vipers (1)

HIGH RIVER – Chantz Vinck stole the show between the pipes for the High River Flyers on Friday evening, stopping 38-of-39 shots fired his way, helping his team skate to a thrilling 3-1 win over the Red Deer Vipers.

Vinck made 20 saves in the opening period alone, while Michael McTighe, Jakob Jefferies and Tyler Alger provided the offence for the Flyers (2-1-0), with Jefferies’ power-play marker late in the second period holding up as the winner.

Jordan Volk scored the lone goal for Red Deer (0-1-0), while Justin Travis finished with 24 saves in a losing effort.

Okotoks Bisons (4) – Strathmore Wheatland Kings (2)

OKOTOKS – Austin O’Bray scored twice as the Okotoks Bisons made it three wins in a row to start the season as they held on for a 4-2 victory over the Strathmore Wheatland Kings.

Kyle Dunville broke a 2-2 deadlock with 8:14 remaining in the third period to put the Bisons (3-0-0) out in front, while Tyler Bordt sealed the deal with a power-play marker in the final minute.

Devin Reagan was solid between the pipes, stopping 31-of-33 shots faced.

The Wheatland Kings (0-1-0) also got an impressive showing from their goaltender as Brett Willan finished with 55 saves.

Isaac Benoit and Tyler Wirth provided the scoring for Strathmore.

Lomond Lakers (6) – Three Hills Thrashers (0)

THREE HILLS – Cort Armstrong opened the scoring 1:28 into the game and the Lomond Lakers didn’t look back from there as they skated to a 6-0 win over the Three Hills Thrashers.

Ryan Leeper scored twice for the Lakers (1-0-0), his second of the night coming just 12 seconds into the middle stanza to make it a 4-0 game, while just 23 seconds later Gavin Burns also found the back of the net.

Kyle Fry, shorthanded, and Tyler Rohl rounded out the scoring, while Theo Paskuski made 26 save to register the shutout.

Indiana Kelly and Devon Carroll combined to make 29 saves in the Thrashers’ (0-2-0) crease.

Airdrie Thunder (13) – Stettler Lightning (2)

AIRDRIE – Jordan McConnell had himself a monster night, scoring four times and adding four assists, as the Airdrie Thunder cruised to a 13-2 win over the Stettler Lightning.

Rylan Plante-Crough finished with six points, scoring once and adding five helpers, while Cooper Page had a goal and four assists.

Jacob MacDonald also registered a hat trick for the Thunder (1-0-0), while Zachary Dubois found the back of the net twice, and Brett Legrandeur and Benjamin Orde rounded out the scoring, each adding a single.

Jackson Little stopped 24-of-26 shots between the pipes for the Thunder.

Quade Cassidy and Brenden Tucker had the goals for the Lightning (0-1-0), which got a combined 57 saves from goaltenders Dalton Beck and Davin Nattestad.
