Bailey Lawson found the back of the net twice as the Red Deer Vipers opened the best-of-three Heritage Junior Hockey League championship series with a 6-4 win over the Coaldale Copperheads on Friday evening.
Brody Kalinowski, Jordan Volk and Tristyn Zarbiak each finished with a goal and assist for the Vipers, which trailed 2-1 after 20 minutes before coming alive in the middle frame, posting a four-goal period to take a 5-3 lead after 40 minutes.
Declan Johnston rounded out the Red Deer attack, while netminder Cole Sears recorded the win between the pipes, making 28 saves along the way.
The Copperheads got goals from four different skaters as Levi Anderson, Tyler Anderson, Jayden Bexte and Sam Paskuski each netted a single.
Nolan Berner suffered the loss in net, stopping 33-of-38 shots on the night.
The Vipers can close out the series and capture their second consecutive HJHL title with a win in Game 2 on Saturday night. Puck drop in Coaldale is at 7:30pm.
