Thunder 4, Vipers 3 (shootout)
The goaltenders stole the show.
Jason Horn stole the 'W'.
The Airdrie Techmation Thunder and the Red Deer Vipers went back and forth all night before heading to a shootout that took nine rounds to decide a winner.
Thunder goaltender Jackson Little and his Vipers counterpart, Dawson Weatherill, both turned aside six of the first eight shooters.
After Little turned aside a ninth shooter, Horn pulled off a slick deke to end the marathon and give the Thunder a 4-3 win.
"I had to change my plan at the last second," Horn said. "I wanted to shoot blocker but he had his blocker down low so I went backhand."
Kory Zinck, Cody Brodhagen and Kyle Bracko scored for the Thunder (24-6-1), who moved eight points clear of the second-place Vipers (20-9-1) in the HJHL's North Division.
Bracko and Jordan McConnell scored earlier in the shootout.
Justin Paarup, Austin Gallant and Rylan Burns replied for Red Deer, which saw its 11-game winning streak snapped. The Vipers hadn't lost since Nov. 30.
Jacksyn Goodall and Nicholas Scott also found the net in the shootout.
The Vipers powerplay will shoulder some of the blame after going 0-for-8 on the night. The Thunder finished 1-for-4.
The Thunder visit the Rocky Rams Saturday night (8:30 p.m.).
The Vipers host the Coaldale Copperheads on Saturday (8 p.m.).
Generals 7, Flyers 6
The Generals were staring a loss right in the face.
Dean Olenyk didn't like what he saw.
Trailing 6-4, with just over 13 minutes to play, Olenyk went to work.
Cochrane's top scorer brought the visitors to within a goal, set up Taylor Girard's equalizer and then sniped the winner with just 34 second left in regulation time.
Olenyk's heroics overshadowed a massive performance from High River's Layne Sniher, who was in on every one of his squad's goals (one marker, five assists).
Zachary Stewart, Jordan Fisher, Chris Sambrook and Patrick Forde also scored while Jordan Marks had four assists for the Generals (21-8-2), who sit second in the South Division.
Liam Bollivar, Michael McTighe, Josh Russo and Jharin Bantugan also scored for the Flyers, who dropped to 11-18-3, good for fifth in the South.
Cochrane hosts Strathmore on Sunday (5:30 p.m.).
High River visits Sylvan Lake on Sunday night (8 p.m.).
